First aid saves pets' lives, too

Kihei, a 5-year-old Shih Tzu, is known to get a bit excited when she eats -- to the point of choking on snacks like Cheerios.

Pam Sage learned how to stop Kihei from choking by lifting her hind legs, but Saturday she learned other ways to deal with pet emergencies. The Lake in the Hills resident obtained her American Red Cross certificate for first aid for dogs and cats during a class in South Elgin.

Rome's disappearing dogs

For a couple of months now, sinister vans have been patrolling the streets of Rome. Reports are that the vans are blue and that on the side they bear the legend animal protection or veterinary police, but they are neither official nor benign. They have been spotted lurking on side streets just off the bustle of Via del Tritone in the centre, near the Giardini di Corcolle in Prenestino to the east of the city and out on the deserted roads around the Idroscalo in Ostia. And they are after your dogs. .

Dogs not to blame, says expert

PEOPLE need training in dealing with aggressive dogs, and the dogs themselves are not to blame for attacks, a canine expert says after two women were savaged by a pit bull.

A 27-year-old woman and a 40-year-old woman were attacked by a pit bull at a house in the Hunter region, north of Sydney, yesterday.

One of the victims required facial surgery and was still in hospital this morning.

The dog attacked the younger woman before turning on the older woman when she tried to intervene, police said.

Police said they had not yet found the dog or its owner and and why the dog was in the home had not been established.

Dog behaviour expert Vern Ryan said he believed the owner of the animal caused the attack.

"It is time that owners were held responsible for their dog's actions, not the dog itself," Mr Ryan said today.
