Residents on alert after Great Dane bites housewife in Aichi city

OWARIASAHI, Aichi -- Local residents are on the alert following an incident in which a large dog believed to be a Great Dane attacked a housewife, biting her hand.

Parents and teachers at schools in the area where the incident occurred are standing guard along school routes to make sure that no children are attacked.

Officials at the Aichi prefectural animal welfare center believe the dog came from a former store in the neighboring city of Seto, and warned the owner, but the owner said his dog was not responsible.

Police who received a complaint from the woman who was bitten plan to question the man in the near future on suspicion of injury through negligence.

Seto Municipal Government officials said a worker at a prefectural labor training center spotted two black dogs and one white dog in the city at about 3 p.m.

Family Life with a Tervuren by Maureen LeBlanc

The LeBlanc Family of eight, all share the affection and in some ways the training of Aspen, a two year old Belgian Shepherd (Tervuren). For a Belgian, a breed of dog which needs to be with its family and almost demands constant love, it is heaven for him to be in a household of this size where the six kids and mom are home during the day. From the moment our family begins the day Aspen is waiting with kisses and tail wagging while he receives hugs from everyone. All the family members have learned from the time he was a puppy what is expected in owning a dog, such as letting Aspen out into his kennel when he rings his bell hanging near the door, giving him water when he scoots his bowl toward the kitchen, or the many different training commands and rules which must be consistent with everyone in order to be effective.

One man and his dog on charity hike

ONE man and his dog are about to embark on a 250-mile hike around the county boundary of Wiltshire to raise money for a hospice.

Peter Fletcher, of Kempsfield, Devizes, and his loyal Collie-cross companion Barnie, will be walking the boundary to raise money for Dorothy House Hospice, in Winsley.

After years of back problems, Mr Fletcher is now fit and ready and will be marking his 60th birthday on Friday, May 18 with the first day of the walk.

He said: "I'm raising money for the hospice because cancer is one of those conditions that affect us all in one or another and I just wanted to do my bit to help.

"I have drawn up a map but as I go along I will update it. Then at the end Dorothy House are going to turn it into a little book which they are hoping to sell to raise funds."

The dedicated walker is likely to be battling the warmer-than-average weather conditions on the trek, but both he and Barnie have put in many hours and miles of training to prepare.
