| The Art of Raising a Puppy
Now the monks concentrate on the first three months of a puppy's life in The Art of Raising a Puppy. The book observes a litter of monastery puppies from birth to 12 weeks. Tender photographs and dialogue reflect these precious first few weeks of life. Even at this time, the human-canine link is vital; the monks stress the importance of gentle touch to help forge this connection. Basic puppy training techniques are explored and executed, all of which puppy owners should find easy to implement. Virtually all types of dog problems and dog training are examined in the book, always in compassionate and easily comprehensible language. The monks also look well beyond surface training techniques to analyze the roots of dogs' problems and explain how training can help. Owners are taught how to gently assert dominance over their dog, which will make for a long-lasting and fulfilling relationship.
Helping Paws progam aids disabled, handicapped
DWIGHT, Ill. (AP) - Angela Little sat at a small table, pretending to read a book. When the alarm clock sounded across the room, she ignored it. Her dog, Hannah, rushed over to her and jumped up, trying to get her attention. Without saying a word, she gestured to the dog, followed her to the alarm clock and turned it off. Hannah got a treat and Little got a sense of accomplishment. Hannah is in training to be a hearing alert dog. Her trainer, a native of Gibson City, is an inmate at Dwight Correctional Center. "I figured if I had to be here, what better a program to be in," Little said. The program, Helping Paws, is the first and only one in Illinois. The first dogs entered the prison in May 2000. Since that time, 116 dogs have passed through the fence at Dwight.
One man and his dog on charity hike
ONE man and his dog are about to embark on a 250-mile hike around the county boundary of Wiltshire to raise money for a hospice. Peter Fletcher, of Kempsfield, Devizes, and his loyal Collie-cross companion Barnie, will be walking the boundary to raise money for Dorothy House Hospice, in Winsley. After years of back problems, Mr Fletcher is now fit and ready and will be marking his 60th birthday on Friday, May 18 with the first day of the walk. He said: "I'm raising money for the hospice because cancer is one of those conditions that affect us all in one or another and I just wanted to do my bit to help. "I have drawn up a map but as I go along I will update it. Then at the end Dorothy House are going to turn it into a little book which they are hoping to sell to raise funds." The dedicated walker is likely to be battling the warmer-than-average weather conditions on the trek, but both he and Barnie have put in many hours and miles of training to prepare.
