| Police puppies named by sick kids
Two German Shepherd puppies are poised to start training for their future careers as police service dogs with the Edmonton Police Service. Shadow and Hutch made their public debuts Thursday morning at the Stollery Childrens Hospital. Kids at the Stollery were asked to come up with names for the puppies and the contest winners were selected by the EPS Canine Unit. Shadow is a black female dog while Hutch is a black-and-brown male puppy. Both are 10 weeks old. Theyre scheduled to start preliminary obedience training in mid-May and enrole in official EPS basic training when theyre 14 months old. If they ace their training, theyll go on active duty by the fall of 2008. Twelve dog-and-handler teams currently make up the EPS Canine Unit. .

Falcons' Petrino believes Vick not involved in dog-fighting case
Bobby Petrino has known Michael Vick for only a few months. That's long enough for the Atlanta Falcons' coach to believe his biggest star wasn't involved in an alleged dog-fighting operation. Petrino said he hopes the star quarterback will soon be cleared of any connection to the dozens of dogs found last month at a home Vick owns in Virginia. "I need to believe in Michael," said Petrino, who was hired by the Falcons in January to replace Jim Mora. "His track record with me is that he's told me the truth. I'm going to believe what Michael tells me." Vick has blamed wayward relatives for taking advantage of his generosity and insisted that he's rarely at the house in Smithfield, Va., where the dogs were found - even though he's the owner. The Falcons say they can't comment on the specifics of the dog-fighting case until officials in Virginia reach a decision on whether to file charges.
Cheers and Jeers: Dispute over bill draws complaint
The jeer: Jeers to a Mash House waitress. We paid our $30.17 tab with a $20 bill and a debit card for the rest. When she returned, the $20 was gone, and the full amount was charged to the card. When questioned, she said, "Did you want change?" then, "There was no $20," and, "Should I have only charged $10.17 to it?" She said she saw the $20 on the table but that we never gave it to her. We checked around the table, and in a huff she said, "I guess I can check my area." Her defensive attitude and backtracking on answers made her seem quite guilty. My friend said to forget it and still tipped her ... hoping karma would sort it out. — Denise Janicki, Fayetteville About Janicki: Janicki said she has been to the Mash House Restaurant and Brewery "infrequently." The day of the incident, she went with a group of about 15 friends and co-workers from the bank where she works.
