Local newcomer to dog agility contests finds success
Joan Simon doesn't mind the near-constant traveling, the hard work or the running round it takes to keep her 4-year-old border collie, Java, in tip-top condition. In fact, when she sees the happy look in Java's eyes when he participates in agility contests, it's all worth it. "I got hooked on making my dog happy," said Simon, 55. "It's like taking your child to the playground the look on their faces, they light up, they get so excited and happy." Simon and Java recently placed in the American Kennel Club's 11th annual national agility championship in Sunbury, Ohio, which took place March 30-April 1. It was her second time in the contest and the second time she placed. "That's unheard of," she said. Simon, of Sheboygan, has been training dogs for 35 years.
