How Can I Get My Dog to Tell Me when She Needs to Go Out?

My dog knows it is bad to use the bathroom in the house but I can't get her to warn me. How can I get her to let me know when she needs to go out?

A: One of the most commonly used training tools is a bell hung on the doorknob.

I would recommend getting a large bell (too big for your dog to swallow in one piece) and hang it on the doorknob. Before you go out, have your dog ring the bell. Show him/her how to use the bell by ringing it with his/her paw, and ask if he/she wants to go outside. Over time, your dog will learn that if he/she needs to go out, all they need to do is to ring the bell. It is a very neat trick and has worked well in many homes.

A company accused of selling sick dogs to Warminster's police department and ignoring a court order to reimburse authorities for their losses is up to its old tricks, according to a Florida breeder familiar with the company.

Kiewel Working Dogs International was ordered by a Bucks County judge four months ago to pay Warminster more than $26,000 for delivering unhealthy dogs, but the company hasn't paid anything or responded to the lawsuit. The court entered a default judgment when no one showed up to represent Kiewel in court.

Ivan Balabanov, of Plant City, Fla., gives dog-training seminars all over the world. He said company owner David Kiewel has been moving around to stay ahead of his shady reputation and that top breeders have shunned him for years.

Balabanov said Kiewel first contacted him in 2004 because he wanted to learn about his methods.
