Deceptively dangerous: Why ATVs keep killing

The final weekend in March dawned gray and damp across much of the country -- but eager riders pulled out their all-terrain vehicles anyway and hit the springtime trails.

Soon the ambulances rolled, too.

In North Carolina, an ATV overturned and crushed an 18-year-old woman to death. A collision with a truck killed two ATV riders in Centertown, Ky. Two girls, ages 4 and 7, died in separate ATV wrecks in eastern Texas. And two infants -- a 14-month-old in South Carolina and an 8-month-old in Perris, Calif. -- died in two more ATV crashes.

In Oregon that weekend, Debby Schubert, 45, and Donnie Moody, 31, became the state's first ATV fatalities this year when their machine tumbled into a dry canal east of Redmond.

Nine dead, including four children.

Blind athletes always last to dog it

Blind bicyclists and their buddies took the battle to an enemy Sunday. Three blind cyclists adopted "stoker" positions on the rear of tandem bikes, as three sighted "pilots" grabbed the handlebars. Joined by 27 other cyclists on Team GDB (representing the Guide Dogs for the Blind school in San Rafael), they rode routes ranging from 25 to 50 miles in the Napa Valley Tour de Cure -- and raised more than $17,000 in pledges for the American Diabetes Association on the way.

Morry Angell, a spokeswoman for Guide Dogs, said diabetes is now a foremost cause of adult blindness in the United States. Of nine million Americans with visual impairment, 5.3 million got it from the effects of "diabetic retinopathy" -- which destroys and disrupts tissue at the back of the eye.

This was Guide Dogs' first team at the Tour de Cure.
